Stan Chan

Stan Chan practices both traditional Chinese brush painting and Western oil and watercolor techniques. He studied art whilst living in Hong Kong in the 1960s and was captured by the art and style of Chinese traditional painting. Stan came to New Zealand in 1972 and worked as an art director for many corporations.

In 1979, Stan set up his own studio in Wellington and since then has worked as a full-time artist and freelance art director. Stan has taught art classes at the Invelochy Art School, Wellington Art Club, Karori Arts Centre, and Hutt Art Society and has given painting demonstrations and talks at art groups, schools and at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

For AAAH2018 Stan Chan co-led Master Class #1: Shaping Ink alongside Yueyun Song - a workshop that addressed ink, as used in Chinese traditional painting, and also explored different ways that people can take the art of shaping ink, hosted by Massey University.
